Coronado’s management team has over 100 years of combined experience in all aspects of the coal value chain, from the discovery of resources, through to development, production and marketing.
Our management team also has a successful track record building and operating coal mining operations in Australia, the U.S. and globally. This operational experience is supplemented with a strong knowledge base of Australian and U.S. domestic and international coal markets and their key drivers.
EXECUTIVE TEAM

DOUGLAS THOMPSON
Chief Executive Officer
Douglas Thompson has more than 25 years’ international experience in the mining sector and was appointed Coronado’s Chief Executive Officer at the 2023 AGM (effective 25 May 2023). Prior to this Douglas held the role of Coronado’s Chief Operating Officer Australia since September 2021. As Chief Executive Officer, Douglas is ultimately responsible for ensuring the successful delivery of Coronado’s financial, operational, safety, people and environmental targets and strategies.
Douglas joined Coronado from CIMIC Group where he held the role of Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Thiess since 2017. In addition to these accountabilities, in the role of Mining and Mineral Processing Executive, Douglas was responsible for leading CIMIC Group’s operating company Sedgman. His strong industry reputation lies in driving operational excellence and developing greater in-house capability to deliver increased shareholder value and business growth.
Prior to this, he held leadership roles with Gold Fields in South Africa. Douglas holds a National Higher Diploma in Mechanical Engineering from Cape Peninsula University of Technology, a Bachelor of Science (Honors) Engineering Mining from the University of Witwatersrand and has completed an International Executive Development Program with the University of Cambridge Business School; University of Witwatersrand. Douglas is also a Chartered Professional Engineer and Fellow of Engineers Australia and AusIMM.

JEFF BITZER
Group Chief Operating Officer
Jeff Bitzer was promoted to Group Chief Operating Officer from Chief Operating Officer – US on 10 July 2023 to further align our global operations and ensure opportunities for knowledge and expertise sharing are optimised to boost safety, innovation, efficiency, and sustainability measures worldwide.
Jeff joined Coronado in 2013 and previously held the role of Vice President, US Operations responsible for the management of safety and environmental performance, costs, productivity, and capital expenditure for all US Operations. With over 40 years’ experience in operations management involving all aspects of coal mining, Jeff has a technical background involving safety management, environmental compliance, cost control and analysis, production management, reserve evaluation, quality control, and process improvement.
Prior to joining Coronado, Jeff held several positions including President and General Manager, Manager of Contract Operations and Director of Engineering for Arch Coal, Inc.; Vice President and General Manager for Magnum Coal Company; and Vice President of Operations for United Coal Company.
Jeff is a licensed West Virginia professional engineer with a Bachelor of Science in Mining Engineering from West Virginia University.

GERHARD ZIEMS
Group Chief Financial Officer
Gerhard Ziems was appointed the Group CFO of Coronado in July 2020 and is responsible for finance, capital management, strategic planning, treasury, tax and risk management. In this role Gerhard is also responsible for ensuring that the financial operations of the group supports the delivery of business objectives including the identification, evaluation and execution of business development opportunities.
Gerhard is a well-established executive with extensive experience in listed and private equity blue chip organisations.
Prior to joining Coronado, Gerhard was Chief Financial Officer at Pacific National, Australia’s largest railroad company. He also was CFO of the BHP Mitsubishi Alliance, BHP’s Global Head of Coal Marketing and has worked in Australia, Asia, the Middle East and Europe in various finance and commercial roles.
Born and educated in Germany, Gerhard holds a Master’s Degree in Finance & Civil Engineering from Braunschweig University of Technology where he lectured for two years in Finance and Civil Engineering.
Gerhard has held non-executive directorships with globalCOAL (UK), the Jellinbah Group, the Australian German Chamber of Commerce (both Australia) and Peace River Coal (Canada).

CHRISTOPHER P. MEYERING
Vice President, Chief Legal Officer and Secretary
Christopher (Chris) Meyering joined Coronado in September 2021 as its Vice President, Chief Legal Officer and Secretary and comes from a broad commercial law background specialising in business transactions, corporate governance and compliance, litigation management and government affairs.
Previously, Chris was associated with Sciens Capital Management, a private equity firm located in New York, as its Chief Legal Officer and Chief Compliance Officer. He was responsible for all legal and regulatory matters affecting the Sciens funds and partnerships. Prior to Sciens, Chris worked as Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary for a start-up energy concern in New York City, Pure Energy Corporation; and as Assistant General Counsel and Director of Government Affairs at a Fortune 500 firm in Richmond, VA, The Brinks Company (NYSE:BCO).
Chris was previously associated with the law firms of Day, Berry & Howard, in its corporate department, and Whitman & Ransom, in the litigation department. Chris received his undergraduate and law degrees from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.

EMMA POLLARD
Chief People and Sustainability Officer
Emma joined Coronado in January 2018 and has responsibility for people and culture, learning and development, reward and recognition, community relations and internal communications for the Group.
Emma has over 15 years’ leadership experience and has led HR teams across the globe, including European and Australian/New Zealand regional teams. In addition to the management of the full range of HR functions, Emma has specific expertise in change management, organisational development and merger and acquisition activity. She has worked across manufacturing, pharmaceuticals and other heavy industries. Prior to joining Coronado Emma was Head of HR, European Operations with Mylan.
Emma holds a postgraduate qualification in Human Resource Management from the University of Northumbria, an Institute of Management Diploma and a Certificate of Management Services — both from New College Durham, and a Bachelor of Arts (Hons.) in Business Administration from the University of Sunderland in the United Kingdom. She also holds a Certificate in Professional Coaching.

GAROLD SPINDLER
Executive Chair
Garold (Gerry) Spindler has more than 30 years’ experience in the coal industry. He has held several key executive positions at some of the world’s largest coal companies, including Chief Executive Officer of UK Coal, President and Chief Executive Officer of Amax Coal Company (US), and President and Chief Executive Officer of Pittston Coal Company. Gerry is owner and chairman of St Cloud Mining. Gerry has been Coronado’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer since 2011.
Gerry has managed operations in the United States, Australia, Canada and the United Kingdom. He was the 2010 recipient of West Virginia University’s Distinguished Engineer of Mines, and the 2008 recipient of the Erskine Ramsay Medal Award of the Society of Mining. Gerry has an industry track record of high sales and earnings growth, with full profit and loss responsibility.
Gerry holds a Bachelor of Science, as well as a Masters in Mining Engineering from West Virginia University and a Masters of Business Management from Stanford University.

BILL KOECK
Deputy Chair and Lead Independent Non-Executive Director
William (Bill) Koeck holds a LLB/LLM (Hons) from The University of Sydney, and a Diploma of Applied Corporate Finance (ASIA). Bill has over 40 years’ experience in M&A, equity capital markets, private equity, restructuring and workouts, company and securities law and corporate governance. He is consistently acknowledged by peers as a leading lawyer and has been a guest lecturer in post-graduate corporate and securities law in the Law Faculty at The University of Sydney for 20 years. Bill has represented some of the world’s largest mining and resources companies on major transactions as lead adviser and on the IPOs of some of Australia’s leading listed companies. He has had extensive involvement as legal counsel in the coal industry in Australia and North America.
Bill’s experience as a partner in two major law firms includes as Head of Corporate and Head of M&A as well as management roles which included responsibility for determining remuneration, equity and partner appointments. He has acted as a Non-executive director of two public companies, in one case as Chairman and the other as Chairman of the Audit and Risk Committee and member of the Remuneration Committee, and is the independent non-executive director of a large privately-held family company group. Bill is also a Non-executive director of Nick Scali Limited.
Since 2015, he has been a member of the Takeovers Panel which has sole jurisdiction for Australian public company and fund takeovers, which is an Australian Government statutory appointment.

PHILIP CHRISTENSEN
Independent Non-Executive Director
Philip Christensen is the sole director of Christensen Legal, a Brisbane-based boutique law firm practising general corporate law. His practice is focused on the coal mining sector. Philip has more than 30 years’ experience in the corporate/M&A area and was a partner at Herbert Smith Freehills for 23 years, predominantly advising companies within the resources sector. In particular, Philip has extensively advised Australian and overseas mining companies, investors and others in the mining industry. His experience includes Australia and offshore jurisdictions such as Indonesia and Singapore, where he lived for a number of years.
Philip has negotiated agreements for the sale or acquisition of significant exploration resources, mines and mining companies across a range of minerals but extensively coal joint venture and associated agreements and a wide range of contractual arrangements. Philip has also been an adviser for many years on operational matters for mining companies.
Prior to forming Christensen Legal, Philip served in a number of roles, including as Executive Director of an Australian coal exploration company, Chairman of a non-listed base metals exploration company, and a non-executive director of the ASX-listed companies Aston Resources and Whitehaven Coal. Philip was on the Board of Aston Resources when it listed on ASX via its IPO in 2010.
Philip is currently a non-executive director on a start-up company called EcoJoule Energy Pty Ltd. This is a private company developing electrical products for strategic applications.
A graduate of The University of New South Wales, Philip holds a Bachelor of Commerce (with Merit) and Bachelor of Laws. He is a solicitor admitted to practice in Queensland.

GREG PRITCHARD
Independent Non-Executive Director
Greg Pritchard is a corporate executive with broad experience across a range of ASX-listed companies including in global energy, mining and finance.
Greg’s most recent position was Managing Director of the listed global distributed energy generator, Energy Developments Limited (EDL). EDL owns and operates an international portfolio of over 100 distributed power projects in Australia, the United States, Canada and Europe and is Australia’s largest remote energy provider to mines and towns as well as being a leading clean energy provider. Greg was Managing Director for EDL between 2007 and 2016, having joined the company as Finance Director in 2001.
Prior to his appointment to EDL, Greg was the CFO of the listed QCT Resources Limited (QCT) and, prior to that, of QNI Limited. QCT was one of Australia’s largest coal producers, holding a 32% interest in the CQCA and Gregory Joint Ventures in Queensland’s Bowen Basin with BHP Billiton and Mitsubishi and direct ownership of the South Blackwater mine. Greg previously held various senior positions at KPMG and Wardley James Capel in Australia, the United Kingdom and Europe.
Greg currently serves as a non-executive director of The Port of Newcastle.
Greg is a Fellow of Chartered Accountants Australia & New Zealand and holds a Bachelor of Commerce from The University of Melbourne and a Master of Applied Finance from Macquarie University.

LAURA TYSON
Non-Executive Director
Laura Tyson serves as a Managing Director, the Chief Operating Officer and the General Counsel for EMG. She has over 25 years’ experience working on corporate and securities transactions. Prior to joining EMG in February 2014, Laura was a Partner at Baker Botts L.L.P. and was a member of the Master Limited Partnership (MLP), Energy and Private Equity practice groups. She was very involved in the firm’s management and served as a hiring partner for four years and on the firm’s executive committee. In her practice, Laura advised private equity funds, hedge funds and other investors in fund and special purpose vehicle formation as well as in the conduct of their investment activities and she represented issuers, underwriters and investors in a variety of equity and debt offerings and mergers and acquisitions. While at Baker Botts L.L.P., Laura’s practice was focused on the energy sector and MLPs, including those engaged in coal mining, pipeline transportation and gathering, storage, oil and gas exploration and production, compression, shipping and propane, and she served as outside counsel to EMG on both portfolio company investments and co-investment structuring beginning in 2008. Additionally, she created the first mutual fund focused on investing exclusively in MLPs.
Laura currently serves as a director of numerous EMG portfolio companies including Ascent Resources LLC and Heritage NonOp Holdings, LLC. Laura graduated Magna Cum Laude from McNeese State University with a Bachelor of Science in Economics and Finance and received a JD from the University of Houston Law Center graduating Cum Laude.

AIMEE R. ALLEN
Independent Non-Executive Director
Aimee Allen is a senior executive with more than 30 years’ international experience in the Steel and Mining Industries having previously held senior positions with BHP, ArcelorMittal and BlueScope Steel.
Aimee held the position of General Manager, Surface for the BHP Olympic Dam mine between 2015 and 2017, and was responsible for the safely mined delivery of copper, uranium, gold and silver from this large-scale Australian operation.
Prior to that, Aimee was General Manager of the ArcelorMittal Vanderbijlpark steel works in South Africa one of the world’s largest inland steel mills and the largest supplier of flat steel products in sub-Saharan Africa. Aimee has also held a number of positions with BlueScope Steel, including General Manager, Western Port Works near Melbourne, Australia where she was responsible for all aspects of the operation.
Currently, Aimee acts as a Principal Consultant for Cyient Consulting, a NYSE listed consulting practice specialising in global engineering and technology solutions.
Aimee holds a Masters in Metallurgical Engineering from The Ohio State University and an MBA from the University of Pittsburgh.

JAN C. WILSON
Independent Non-Executive Director
Jan Wilson is a seasoned executive with over 25 years’ experience in commodities, renewables, risk management, structured products, asset acquisition and energy transition.
Jan currently serves as a Senior Advisor for CPP (Canadian Pension Plan) Investments in its Sustainable Energy Group and is the Founder and President of JW 1000 Ltd, a Toronto-based corporate advisory practice focused on providing advice on project contracts required to support financing and allocation of risk for sustainable energy projects.
Since 2020, Jan has served on several Boards including Creston Peak Resources, an independent energy company focused on the extraction of oil and gas reserves in the Denver-Julesburg Basin; Spartan Acquisition Corp III prior to its merger with Allego Holding B.V.; Spartan Acquisition Corp II prior to its merger with Sunlight Financial; and Spartan Acquisition Corp I prior to its merger with Fisker Inc. Jan retains her position on the Board of Spartan Acquisition Corp IV, a NYSE listed company focussed on the energy value chain with a particular focus on opportunities aligned with energy transition and sustainability. Prior, Jan has served as a consultant for Royal Bank of Canada, Senior Vice President for RBS Sempra Commodities LLC, Director for Freepoint Commodities LLC, and commenced her career at Enron Corp.
Jan holds a B.A. in Economics and a B.A. in Honors Business Administration from the University of Western Ontario and an M.B.A from Queens University.
