Health initiatives in Australia and the U.S.

Health Fairs conducted at our U.S. operations and training and communication days in Australia aimed to improve the health and wellbeing of Coronado employees.

At Buchanan, Logan and Beckley in the U.S, Health Fairs in October 2023 included screenings by Integrated Health 21 (IH21). The screenings consisted of:

  • fingerstick screening (total cholesterol; HDL/LDL; triglycerides and glucose) with immediate results
  • blood pressure checks
  • flu shots
  • home fit kits for colon cancer screening.

For the Curragh mine workforce in Australia, training and communication days were held in February and March 2023 in Blackwater. Our Curragh leadership team kicked off each session with an overall business update, including the Curragh Ways of Working initiatives. They were followed by a safety presentation by our HS&T team. Guest speakers from MineSuper and LIVIN also attended to give our employees valuable, practical tips on how to improve financial wellbeing and mental health.

Challenge

Our hectic lifestyles and work schedules often prevent us from visiting the doctor on a regular basis. Additionally, stigma associated with mental health and financial wellbeing often prevents people from seeking help. For employees at our mines, some of these services aren’t easily accessible.

Solution

In the U.S., we were proactive in offering screening services at the locations where our employees work, so that they could more easily take advantage of this service.

In Australia, we engaged LIVIN, a not-for-profit organisation, to lead and deliver mental health education to our workforce at Curragh. LIVIN are working to change the stigma associated with mental health with their #itaintweaktospeak campaign. We also sponsored LIVIN to visit local schools to deliver their early education and awareness program, which promotes positive mental health and wellbeing, and increases help-seeking behaviours.

Outcomes

These health initiatives at Coronado reinforce our commitment to building the all-round health and wellbeing of our team members.

Our Health Fairs show employees that we care about their wellbeing. The basic screenings provided at our Health Fairs can offer valuable insight to detect health issues early before they become serious. In some instances, a simple lifestyle change now will enhance healthier living in the future.

Our training and communication days are an important piece of our culture journey, giving us a great avenue for direct two-way communication with our teams. Areas that are enhanced via training events like these include:
