Giving back to the community at Christmas
At Coronado, we believe in the importance of enriching the communities in which we operate. We seek to give back in meaningful ways – from ongoing support of local charities and environmental projects to sponsoring and conducting educational/quality of life initiatives.
Challenge
Christmas can be a difficult time for people who are already struggling, and in 2023 we partnered with charities in the communities where we operate in the USA and in Queensland, Australia, to find out how we could help bring cheer into households.
Solution
In Blackwater, Queensland, we partnered with Blackwater Combined Churches and Community Christmas Appeal which provides presents to children from the Comet to Duaringa areas in the Central Highlands region. About 100 toys or sports equipment were donated, with particular attention being given to the teenage boy demographic as not a lot of donations were traditionally received for that age group.
At our Australian office headquarters, team members contributed to the St Vincent de Paul Society Christmas Food Drive. Our team donated non-perishable food to the charity, for distribution to families in the Brisbane area to enjoy over the festive season. Non-perishable food that was donated included Christmas mince pies, puddings, shortbread, and other food items that could contribute to Christmas lunch and dinners for those less fortunate.
At our Coronado United State’s operations, we partnered with two elementary schools (Holden and Buffalo) in communities we operate in to deliver our 2023 Toys for Tots program. Our site management and human resources teams worked closely with administration at the schools to provide much needed gifts to students – a large percentage of whom come from low-income households. Our staff members’ donations enabled Buffalo Elementary to purchase 210 pairs of shoes for students, and Holden Elementary bought coats, shoes, toys, and a Christmas ham for 140 students. Much needed gifts such as shoes and coats are so critical during the winter months.
Outcomes
Teaming up with charities at Christmas provides Coronado and our employees’ an opportunity to bring cheer to people in the community, who might be lonely or unable to participate in the spirit of Christmas as they would like to. It also demonstrates how much we value the relationships we have in the communities where we operate and how we understand the needs and desires of those who live and work in the community. Giving at Christmas is just one of the ways that helps strengthen our connection to community and give back to the places we live and work in.
