Water inventory dashboard using Power BI

Effective water management is critical to safe, compliant, and efficient operations at the Curragh Complex. To improve visibility and decision-making around water storage volumes and quality across Curragh North and South, the Environment team developed a Water Inventory Dashboard using Power BI. The initiative was driven by the need for a clearer, more efficient way to understand water inventory, particularly during periods of increased wet season risk and operational complexity.

Prior to the dashboard’s development, water information across multiple storages required manual interpretation and cross-referencing, making it difficult to quickly assess risks, identify trends, or prioritise actions. The dashboard addressed this challenge by consolidating key data into an intuitive, visual platform that allows users to quickly understand current water volumes, locations, and emerging issues at a glance.

The dashboard provides a comprehensive snapshot of all storages through the All Storage Overview, featuring a conditionally formatted table that highlights storages at or above 85 per cent capacity, an interactive map showing storage locations, and a graphical ranking from fullest to least full. The Operations page enables teams to concentrate on their specific areas of interest and set weekly priorities, with CN2 displaying current water levels overlaid against the storage curve to support water balancing across the complex. The Water Quality Overview page presents key water quality data and trends, supporting wet season planning and preparation for water releases.

By centralising water inventory and quality information in a single, accessible dashboard, water managers and operational teams can rapidly evaluate water inventory conditions and respond more effectively. The solution has improved visibility across the Curragh Complex, reduced reliance on manual data analysis, and strengthened alignment between Environment and Operations teams. Although developed with operations in mind, the Water Inventory Dashboard has become a valuable tool for broader oversight of wet season readiness and water release planning, providing a scalable and data-driven foundation for future water management initiatives at Curragh.
