Buchanan No. 1 Mine environmental impacts

Buchanan No.1 Mine is an underground coal operation that commenced in 1983. Since production began, more than 152 million tons of coal have been mined and shipped from the site.

As with many underground mining operations, the majority of environmental impacts are associated with the development and management of surface support infrastructure. Over the life of the Buchanan No.1 mine, 17 shafts have been constructed to support underground operations. As mining areas become depleted and infrastructure is no longer required, these shafts are progressively decommissioned and reclaimed.

Under Coronado’s management, three redundant shaft sites have now been filled and reclaimed, demonstrating the Company’s ongoing commitment to responsible land stewardship and progressive rehabilitation.

The most recent project completed was Ventilation Shaft 5. Originally excavated in the early 1990s, the shaft measured 22 feet in diameter and extended 1,475 feet underground. Reclamation works completed in April 2026, with the project delivered at a total cost of approximately $592,000.
